We just returned from a wonderful week on the Cape with the fam. Although I definitely learned some new things on this trip (1. pack a rubber mallet in your beach bag to secure the umbrella nicely in the sand; 2. avoid route 6 east when it's parade day at Carnival in P-Town, etc.), the main lesson I took away is that the word "vacation" is really a misnomer for what we experienced over the past 7 days.
Don't get me wrong! My parents helped out tremendously (as always) and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. It's just that battling a toddler's tenacious will over endless inconsequential interactions is a lot of work. In my mind, a week of crappy sleep patterns, a major shift in appetite, obsession over ceiling fans, and academy award winning tantrums (complete with screaming, throwing toys and hurling one's body on the floor - trifecta!) does not equal "a period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or relaxation".
Gone are the days of sleeping in, summer beach reading, tennis matches, spontaneous miniature golf outings, and general lounging. It's a new world order and on rainy vacation days, I will now stand in line at the Cape Cod Children's Museum mentally and physically prepared to navigate through some very rough terrain called the cycle of want and I will bring two very capable adults as back-up.
How was your summer vacation?

Ha ha, right there with ya! Lucy has woken up at 4am every single day for the past two weeks (since we got back from our vacation). It's hard to say for sure whether it was all worth it.
ReplyDeleteKate - Keni seems to love Zoe so far (besides the fact that he cried when Mike held her the day she was born!). It was GREAT seeing Carrie & Co. October is going to be such a blast.
ReplyDeleteJulie - I'm glad I'm not alone! Maybe your little girl wants to catch a glimpse of the moon? Hope you're well.
Great pics, Leanne! What a great week. :)
